Overview

Aethos Ericeira sits on a cliff, secluded and given over to the sea it looks out on. The Atlantic sets the rhythm here. Mornings begin with salt on the balcony air, and nights close counting the waves as they come in. This is a place shaped for travellers who want to slow down and find their own small ritual by the water. Ericeira itself is about 14 minutes' drive away…

    Disappointing and disrespectful treatment

We visited Aethos Ericeira for coffee on 27 September. After a while, staff asked us to pay, explaining that they were afraid we might leave without paying. We had done nothing to justify that suspicion. The comment felt insulting and made us feel unwelcome. Asking for payment is understandable; making guests feel accused of dishonesty is poor hospitality.

A bit too trendy, excessive health-preaching.

The location of the hotel is beautiful on the cliffs. Our room had a covered balcony where you can sit comfortably and look out at the sea, great! The room is functionally furnished; only the tiny bathroom, which even had an additional pointless door to the toilet that took up even more space, was a bit peculiar. The hotel's lounge areas are nicely furnished, but it was uncomfortable to sit in the constant draft in the lobby. The restaurant is not bad, but the open kitchen means that the air is really greasy and smoky. Other restaurants can only be reached by car. The music / constant background noise is a bit too loud and the style is a bit too uncomfortable. The breakfast is rich, but a bit excessively enriched with superfoods. There are chia seeds, spirulina, or ginger in everything. The snacks in the minibar were also not to our taste (gummy bears or chili nuts), and the drinking water smells like chlorine. The coffee is awful. Parking spaces directly in front of the building.

Wellness retreat masquerading as unmanaged daycare

Oh boy. Well it’s clear that this hotel has an identity crisis and isn’t sure if it’s a wellness-oriented retreat for adults or an all out unmanaged daycare. My friend and I booked a week here under the website’s marketing campaign of tranquility and wellness. We were met with a pool overrun with children unmanaged and unmonitored by their parents. They took over the entire area, running up against our chairs, cannonballing and spraying water as we napped and screaming at the top of their lungs. The staff finally took away the floats that were being used as weapons but they then procured their own toys. Resilient little buggers. The spa is small and you can barely get an appointment unless you book weeks in advance (but not too far bc you won’t be able to book at all). The wellness activities boasted are sparse. The Michelin starred restaurant has the most average food I’ve tasted in years. The staff seems annoyed that they have to split time between doling out cocktails to tired adults wearing headphones to drown out the noise of the kids and speaking to the parents about having their children run around the hotel property (with no supervision). Save your money. Do not go here. Rent an airbnb instead. How disappointing.
