Spa hotels in Cook Islands

The Cook Islands make a convincing case for wellness without turning it into a programme. Warm lagoons, Polynesian massage, coconut oil and an island rhythm shaped as much by community as by tourism create their own kind of reset. There are resort spas, but the setting is still the main event.
Aitutaki slows things down even further. North of Rarotonga, the island wraps around a spectacular lagoon scattered with small motu, while Arutanga, its main settlement, keeps life close to the harbour. The coral-limestone Cook Islands Christian Church here dates to the 1820s and is the oldest church in the country; Sunday services are still known for powerful unaccompanied hymn singing. Saturday brings a different rhythm, with the market around Arutanga Wharf and boats heading out across the lagoon.
May to October is generally cooler and drier, while November to April is warmer, wetter and carries the greater cyclone risk. Most travellers arrive by domestic flight from Rarotonga and quickly discover that Sunday really is treated as a day of rest. On Aitutaki, a massage may be part of the day, but it rarely competes with the lagoon. The official Aitutaki guide is useful for planning time on the island.
