Spa hotels in Mozambique

Mozambique's strongest wellness ingredient is the Indian Ocean. Warm water, long beaches and a coastline still worked by fishing boats and dhows give the country's best retreats an elemental quality. The spa comes after the sea, not the other way around.

Off Vilankulo lies the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, protected since 1971 and spread across five main islands. Its reefs, clear shallows and seagrass habitat support sea turtles, dolphins and an important population of dugongs, the marine mammals whose conservation was one of the reasons the park was established. Diving and snorkelling are obvious draws, but much of Bazaruto's appeal is simply the scale of its sand and water. Vilankulo is the mainland gateway. From its beach, boats and small aircraft move visitors out to the islands while the town itself remains a mix of tourism, fishing and everyday coastal life. This is a place where a massage after a day offshore makes more sense than building an elaborate wellness narrative around the town.

May to October is generally drier, with warm days and lower humidity. November through April is hotter and wetter and overlaps with the regional cyclone season. Vilankulo has its own airport and connections vary by season, so schedules are worth checking rather than assuming a particular daily service.
