Spa hotels in Paraguay

In Paraguay, the most revealing wellness ritual may be a drink passed from hand to hand. Tereré, cold yerba mate infused with water and often herbs, is woven into social life and Guaraní culture. It turns taking time out into something communal rather than private.

Asunción has had plenty of time to develop its own pace. Founded in 1537 on the Paraguay River, it is one of the oldest cities in South America and remains the country's political and cultural centre. Historic buildings, markets and leafy neighbourhoods sit alongside a newer restaurant and café scene, without the city ever feeling engineered primarily for visitors. A spa stay here belongs to modern Asunción rather than to any old bathing tradition. The more distinctive local pleasures happen outside the treatment room: tereré shared through a hot afternoon, chipa and sopa paraguaya at the table, and evenings that stretch comfortably after the worst heat has passed.

Farther afield, the Jesuit missions of southern Paraguay and the immense Chaco reveal how different the rest of the country can be. For most travellers, May through September is the gentler window. Summers can be intensely hot and humid, while the cooler months make walking the city much easier. The official Visit Paraguay guide to Asunción is a useful starting point for exploring beyond the hotel.
