Tanzania is where the safari meets the spa. This is the land of the Serengeti and Kilimanjaro, and just offshore, the spice island of Zanzibar, where powder beaches and Swahili culture turn the wellness dial right down. The classic trip pairs a few days tracking wildlife on the mainland with a barefoot beach-and-spa finish on the island. It is a place of genuine wilderness and deep coastal calm, where an open-air massage might follow a morning among the elephants.

The trip naturally splits in two. The mainland is for wildlife, with the northern safari circuit running through the Serengeti and the town of Arusha as its gateway. The island of Zanzibar is for the wind-down, where the beaches of the north and east coast, around Nungwi and Paje, hold the resort spas, and the old trading port of Stone Town adds Swahili history. Most travellers do both, swapping the dust of the plains for the white sand of the coast.
Timing and pace are everything here. The safari is best in the dry season around June to October, when wildlife gathers at water and the great migration moves through the Serengeti, while Zanzibar is pleasant for much of the year outside the heaviest rains. The Serengeti and the UNESCO-listed Stone Town of Zanzibar are the two anchors of a classic itinerary. The island's spice heritage flavours its food and many of its spa treatments.
