  A Rustic Escape with Magical Views 🌞

  Our first look into Camvillia was awesome, the reception area’s views and a handsome George approaching our rental car, welcoming us, taking our stuff on to a golf cart and whisking downhill with them. We were impressed, but then our room wasn’t ready and we spent over 3 hours waiting in the main reception area.We had to have drinks, a pizza as we were hungry and tired which after complaining to the female manager can’t remember her name, she gave to us complimentary. The Pros:: Our suite when we got to it was nice. In the new part of the resort, all the way downhill looking at other accommodation to the left and tree lined olive and pomegranate trees to the right. 6 ground/ floor suites with a shared pool. A safe, massive bed, bathroom with his and hers sinks, a bath, a large walk in shower with overhead and handheld showers. Air-conditioning and a fan. Complimentary house coats and slippers. Then there was that VIEW!! Absolutely breathtaking! Our shared pool skimmed a vast olive grove downhill to a massive bay, the Messinian gulf..across the Mediterranean to mountains beyond. The moonlight on the sea at night, birdsong and sunrise so breathtaking I softly wept the first morning in gratitude to wake up to such beauty. I didnt miss a single one which started about 6.20 am till 7.45am. The orange lights of the sun spread across the mountain tops in panorama, the sun slowly rose behind the mountain till the whole landscape and sea is covered in orange light.Truly MAGICAL! This place is special, there is potential to be a fantastic resort because the location is great, if you fancy somewhere scenic, a bit off the beaten track peaceful. The gorgeous friendly cats a total bonus. Fell in love with our ginger male “Kiki” beautiful sweet boy! 😍There is a family run taverna just outside the resort gates behind the church where you can have local food. The lads who run it are cheeky and fun. We were half board and although the breakfast wasn’t exciting for us, we found something to eat, fresh sweet tomatoes, feta cheese, melons, grapes. My friend liked the pancakes. Greek yougurts.Nice coffee which you had to ask to be brought in. Tea must always come with a pot of hot water!. Evening meals the grilled sea bass and Greek salad was simply delicious. Truffle risotto was fully truffle flavoured with bits and delicious! The burger! Yum! The menu had other options for an extra charge. We hired a car from Kalamata Airport so we were flexible and happy with the situation of the resort. Otherwise a trip to Koroni the nearest sea side town with lovely sea front restaurants costs €15, hotel reception is happy to organise that for you. The staff, the two Nikos, Nikos at the bar makes a mean Negroni, Andreas, Theodora, David i think his name was, shy South Asian. George, couldn’t do enough for us. He organised some local olives for us before we left at very short notice, which Costas I believe the owner or Manager of the resort hand delivered to us for free from his mother. So Very kind! George, Andreas picked us up from our room daily whenever needed with the buggy, which you call for and is there in minutes to take you uphill. A useful shuttle to the local beach AKTI 5mins away. A golden sand bay, with cabanas a bit pricey or beach loungers for €10. The beach is downhill down several steps,there is also a lift if needed. The waves roll into a bay so flat you can walk 100 meters in the ocean and still be up to the knees. Water is clear blue and you can see the little fishes, who like to take a nibble at you as you float around 😅 Really cute but stings lol! The Cons:: Place was short staffed as it was end of season, end September-1st October. Our room needed more attention than was given. Shower gels etc were in huge bottles not miniature single usage ones. Saves on plastic use I guess but not very 5* We had to call to have our room cleaned the first day. Coffee and tea stuff didn’t get replaced. Spilt coffee on my complimentary house coat put it on the ground expecting a new one and came back after day trip to find the same stained one hang up in the bathroom. Housekeeping is a let down, the beds weren’t made to a 5* standard. The floors weren’t wiped, could still see my wet footprints in the room after swimming. The check in delays, totally unacceptable. We wasted a whole afternoon. Indoor pool was closed and the spa area lacked the necessary ambiance. Could see wires hanging off the walls..massage was amazing however. In summary this my 4th visit to the Greek islands, stayed in Crete and Santorini before now..all 5* this one isn’t….yet. It’s got huge potential. The location, views, nature, adorable cats, the staff, all great!! If little niggles like tea being served without a teapot, housekeeping got corrected, this place will be AWESOME so I will be back. An alternative Greece experience we loved.. serene! Ps. We drove to Olympia. Absolutely spectacular and steeped in ancient history. €20 entry fee. Lovely town centre with good shops and restaurants. Took over 2.15 hours from Camvillia on quite a stressful drive mentally. Irrational speed limits between 30-90 our google maps warned us about but no local seems to pay attention to. We got tailgated by many drivers around mountain bends, worth noting! SMH..

  I tawt i taw a puddy tat

  Believe me, I really, really wanted to give this hotel 5*.... but I can't. The main reason is that although it markets itself as a 5*, (e.g. it charges the Greek 5* tourist tax of 15€/night) it is more comparable to 3.5*'s we've stayed in, maybe 4* at a push. However, the views from the main hotel area and the rooms are truly world class as is the infinity pool. The staff are lovely. The walk downhill to our room was a pleasure with the garden areas to one side and the olive trees on the other. The lift in the little electric car back up the hill was always punctual and very much appreciated. We booked our holiday using Jet2 and had selected a lower floor, pool share room. It was perfectly adequate but again not 5*. A bit tired and it's the little things. Tea/coffee making facilities are provided but items not replaced. When we initially queried this with the cleaning staff, they told us we needed to ask for them at reception where they were dispensed as if they were being rationed. In the end it was easier to buy a jar of coffee and some milk from the little shop close by. Towels and bedding changed daily but the floor was never really swept. The shared pool was kept immaculately clean. The minibar contained a few very expensive items so we just bought our own. Small 24" non smart wall mounted TV with a blurry CNN the only English speaking channel. WiFi OK for casual browsing. Large shower and toilet area. Very comfortable bed. No hotel brochure in the room or a dedicated TV channel to inform you of hotel facilities, local sites and amenities etc. Judging by other reviews, we made the right decision in choosing breakfast only which was a self service buffet. It was OK but not a single item was rotated in the whole of our 2 week stay so it all becomes very samey. Nothing cooked live. Fried eggs piled onto each other in a single tray becomes a yokey gooey slop. We love our Greek yogurt and honey but it was a bit disconcerting to regularly find a desperate wasp wriggling it's last in the honey bowl. Why not use covers for jams and spreads although I wouldn't bother to include the 'butter' as it was that tasteless, near white, waxy marg gloop. The wasps are welcome to that. You nearly always have to ask for a hot (luke warm?) drink rather than the other way round. So nothing 5* about the breakfast experience either. The local area is stunning and we used the beach at Atki. Free parking and 10€ for 2 beds and brolly. Very clean beach and the sea water is crystal clear. Couldn't imagine coming here for an extended stay without a car though. We used Avance at the airport and can recommend them. It allowed us to take advantage of Koroni town's facilities, particularly the restaurants and bars in the evenings. We also did day trips including Ancient Corinth, Olympia, Messini and the spectacular drive through the mountains via the Langada pass to Sparti. BTW if you do hire a car, there's a Lidl about 5 mins from the airport where you can stock up on items for the room at a fraction of the minibar prices. However, we made the big mistake of assuming the 2 bottles of drinking water being supplied daily were free. Not so and we were presented with an alarming 50+ € bill at checkout. Maybe it's the places we go but we haven't paid for drinking water at any hotel for many years - never at a 5* - so that sends them down to a 3 rating instead of 4. Despite our 'moans' we had a very enjoyable holiday and would hope to return to the Peleponese. Maybe a road tour next time to take in all the peninsulas. Oh, it's very important if you do stay here that, like us, you love cats. If you know, you know...

  Not a 5-star hotel

  The hotel has a very beautiful view. However, it is very remote and not recommended without a car. There is a backlog of renovations. The photos shown were taken about 10 years ago. The staff is friendly and tries hard; at the bar, you can sometimes wait 30 minutes for a drink, even though hardly any guests are present. The prices are quite high and fuel corresponding expectations that are by no means met. The facility is not yet finished and all the trash is stored in the back part of the complex. The rooms are functional and also in no way correspond to a 5-star hotel. I honestly wonder where these stars come from. In my opinion, 4 stars at most — the food is mediocre, nicely presented (à la carte) but not particularly good. The spa area does not correspond to the pictures. It is dark, uncomfortable, and not very appealing. I believe they do not know what a 5-star hotel has to offer. Had it not been advertised as "breathtaking," I would not have been so disappointed. Too bad! The facility has potential.
