Overview

A nineteenth-century masseria set within the Itria Valley, Villa San Martino sits amid the Murgia landscape, with its characteristic conical trulli marking the surrounding countryside. Tradition and a considered modern hand meet across the resort, where attention to detail carries into every corner. The kitchen leans on Apulian produce and wine, and the setting, entirely open to nature, is given over to wellness and to receptions and events of…

    A failed stay.

The hotel is good and the reception employees and Mateo are wonderful! The hotel's trattoria is A TOTAL DISASTER!!

    Disappointed

I don’t enjoy writing poor reviews but I feel duty bound to do so now, since I want to help others avoid disappointed expectations. I have no doubt Relais Villa San Martino was once, perhaps 20 years ago, an excellent hotel with elegant grounds. However it has not been updated or even maintained, evidently for a lengthy period of time. My chief issues with this hotel included the following: an unpleasant, persistent smell in the lobby; shabby and malodorous textiles and upholstery; a very dated bathroom with dirty grout; despite booking the highest room category, our view was to a parking lot and a sad, unkempt veranda; the grounds were not maintained with dead plants and debris scattered about. The pool area was not inviting with decrepit loungers and inadequate shade. I did not partake of the breakfast, since it was served in the lobby area with the aforementioned odour, but my husband said it was sparse and a bit sad. There was also a lot of hassle getting in and out of the gated parking lot. The photos on the website are very out of date. On the plus side, the elevator worked, the front desk staff was very pleasant and we were served superior cups of coffee. The staff gave off the vibe that they knew everything was lacking, but were trying hard to make the best of it for the guests. I think this hotel could once again be luxurious but it would require a material investment including replacing all furniture and linens, renovating the bathrooms, and work to restore the grounds.

Beautiful villa let down by its restaurant

Although having sojourned in hundreds if not nearing a thousand hotels, I ironically specialise in writing T/A reviews solely of restaurants, but feel compelled in this instance to warn future clientele of this splendid Villa about the restaurant insitu. You see staying in this wonderful place one is very naturally inclined if not compelled to dine in its restaurant also set in a beautiful scape, complete no brainer one would have thought ! What followed during our ‘meal’ were a series of dishes which can only be described as abominations (see separate T/A restaurant review.) Management really must be called out for this, take full responsibility and rectify the situation tout-suite as in its current form the ‘eatery’ completely undermines a stay in this spectacular villa leaving the guest in our case in despair having been as it were rather unfairly ‘hijacked’ - metaphorically speaking !
