  Beautifully designed - with some shortcomings

  Overall, we had a reasonably good experience The spacious, beautifully designed bungalows are well laid out, with lovely terraces and comfortable seating areas. The restaurant is architecturally striking, built largely from bamboo and shaped like a nave beneath its impressive vaulted roof. The beach is exceptional, with beautifully clear, clean water. However, the management and service do not match the property’s high standard or price level. The reception was not particularly welcoming, and the front-desk staff seemed inefficient and poorly informed. Communication was also a significant issue: apart from the front-desk staff and our guide, very few employees spoke English. This was especially challenging in the restaurant, where communicating with staff and placing orders was often difficult. The excursion programme was another disappointment. Of the many activities advertised on the hotel’s website, only about half were available during our stay, and some could be booked only on specific days. Guests were also grouped together in a single safari vehicle for the excursion included in the package, seemingly so the hotel only had to operate the tour once. This felt inconsistent with the property’s exclusivity and price level. The food was below what we would expect from a hotel of this standard. Service in the restaurant and at the bar was slow, often unmotivated and inattentive, while the language barrier made the experience even more difficult. A truly beautiful property in an exceptional setting, but its management, communication, hospitality and gastronomy need considerable improvement to match its architecture, location and premium positioning.

  Nice but 5 stars nice?

  Amazing with a but. For a 5 star hotel they are doing fine but need to step up their game and here is why… Service: they pick you up at the airport. Waiting for you with a cold drink and cold towel. They help you with your luggage - however they let me struggle with the heavy one - and help you into the car. At arrival you get another cold towel, snacks and a drink. While they do the check in. They gave us a tour of the hotel property. The guy who helped us asked us - while joking- if we brought repellent. We did, however, they know it’s a real problem, they should provide it out of curtesy. Another thing we struggled with is the fact that they often didn’t speak (properly) English. Normally we don’t mind, however in a hotel like this, this can’t be the case. Another thing, we had made the reservation with informing them that it was a honeymoon. So, not sure if it was miscommunication of some kind or not, but we felt a bit too much. In the end they helped us and made the extra details come to life. That was nice. Especially the romantic table for two is very fun and special. Rooms: big and beautiful. We loved the details like the lamp in the room. They have umbrellas for when it rains. There is a minibar and you can grab anything you want. However, they unfortunately also miss some details. We first didn’t had soap at the sink. Then they put it at one of them. The door in the shower is from wood we think it would have been nice if it was from glass. In the evening they prepare your room for the night, we loved that. The small details. Very nice. They also let us stay the day of the check-out the untill we left (around 14:00) to the airport. Cleanliness: very clean. Amenities: a bunch! The infinity pool is amazing. We loved it with all the beds and chairs. So good to relax in the afternoon. However - hence the 4 stars - there is a bar, but the staff never asks you if you want to have a drink or bite. They also don’t clean the dirty towels or don’t pick up the empty glasses. They should be a bit more proactive if you ask us. The spa is nice. We loved the massages. Such a relaxing experience. Furthermore, when they advertise that everything (activity wise) is included, it’s not the case. We didn’t like that as it came as a surprise. Every day they have an activity and they “push” you to go with that one. It’s not the right way to handle something like that. Also none of the water activities are included, for an island that’s strange. They should handle this way better. To be honest the activities on the water should be included. They could have a scheme per day or something like that. We didn’t see the gym nor yoga room, but we guess that’s nice as well. Breakfast: Delicious and more than enough. Well actually, all food was yummmm. We enjoyed every meal. The pineapple juice is also so good and fresh. The staff at the breakfast were so friendly and sweet! For dinner/lunch you have a chefs menu but you can also choose from a regular menu. No matter what you can’t go wrong. Location: In the jungle and we loved it. It gets dark but they provide you with a torch. It’s dark because of the turtles and to fight against light pollution. Price: $$$$$ expensive. We are still not sure if we think it’s worth the money. However there are not a lot of options on this island.

  Overpaid with shortcomings

  We only stayed here for one night, but that was enough. The complex is beautifully located in the jungle by the beach and the tent villa was very large and luxurious, but unfortunately there are also various shortcomings that such an expensive luxury accommodation should not have. Quite a few families with children stay there, so it's not really quiet. The ways within the complex are relatively long. For example, we had to walk about 10 minutes from our tent villa to the restaurant. If you're not very mobile, this complex is not suitable. The food was nothing special. At the other HBD resorts, such as Bom Bom Island or Roca Sundy, there were always two dishes to choose from for dinner. This was the case for the starter, main course and dessert. Here, there was only one menu. Drinks are included in the price of the accommodation, but only the cheap ones. For example, a cocktail at the bar costs extra. The worst thing we noticed was that other people had bed bugs. We saw the bites ourselves. The management told people not to tell anyone else. People were then moved to Roca Sundy and Bom Bom Island Resort due to lack of space. In other words, the management wants to cover up such things. All in all, the resort is overpriced and does not offer good value for money. Therefore, we will not be staying there again in the future.
