Not a Five Star Establishment
This review is difficult to write because the staff were FANTASTIC! Maria and Emma at the front, Eduardo and Marina in the dining room, housekeeping and some of the other servers of which I didn't get names, were all fabulous. Unfortunately, they as individuals cannot resolve the holistic problems at Torre Del Marques.
I booked this stay (Sept 27-29, 2026) a few months prior for my husband and my 19th wedding anniversary. Excited about the grounds, view and all the activities available on-site, I was amenable to the 5-star price. My first hints of disappointment came when I couldn't adjust our reservation immediately after booking (I accidentally chose the wrong check-out date) -- the website kept giving an error message, so I sent an email requesting a date adjustment, to which I didn't receive a response. I ended up having to call two weeks before our trip to make sure that our reservation was changed. At that time, I was told that the dates couldn't be adjusted? That my request was too close to our stay dates. At which time I referred to the email I sent six weeks prior. Eventually, the booking issue was resolved, but that was just the beginning ....
I sent an email a day prior to our stay to request a dinner reservation the night of our arrival and some help planning wine tasting, spa treatments and a hike for our anniversary day activities. Sergio messaged back confirming our dinner reservation and said that reception would help plan activities upon check-in. A few hours later I received a What'sApp message from Maria asking if I wanted dinner reservations for the night of arrival. Confused, because I just thought I made reservations with Sergio, I responded that I thought Sergio already secured our reservation. Maria responded to my message in agreement.
My husband and I were hopeful for a wonderful stay as we drove up the beautiful roadway to Torre Del Marques, but things started to feel strange as we came to two security gates, requiring call-in entry, that took a long time to respond and eventually open. As we drove up toward the hotel, we noticed a lot of messy construction -- red tubes popping out the ground, construction supplies everywhere ... and then the strong smell of manure. The place appeared to be under some expanding renovation which we were not notified of before our stay. Alas, we still remained hopeful.
Maria met us out front of the hotel as we unloaded our luggage. She was very welcoming and hospitable, helping us into the building and getting us started with check-in. But it was weird that we appeared to be the only patrons on the property aside from one other couple. Maria served us each a glass of wine from the on-site winery as she finished the check-in process. At that time, I asked for help planning our anniversary activities, as Sergio suggested. She let me know that there was a wine tasting/tour at 6 pm that evening that we could join. We were just checking-in at 5 pm and needed to rest, so declined that tasting/tour and requested one for the next day (our anniversary). She said that she didn't think that day would be possible, but she would check. I then asked to schedule a massage for the next day and was told that it may be possible, but she would need to check. In the end, Torre Del Marques was unable to accomodate wine tour/tasting or a massage for our anniversary. I was thoroughly confused because up until check-in, I was given every indication that these services would be available. Even the welcome letter upon check-in encourages us to book experiences at the wine estate and spa ... and yet when I tried to do so, I'm just told they are not available. The welcome letter also mentioned a pool that was open 11:00 to 19:00 in September, so I thought hubs and I could lounge there since the other activities weren't available. I asked Maria about that option and she said the pool was closed.
Everything just seemed very strange. This certainly wasn't the 5-star hotel that I read about before booking a couple months earlier. So, I googled to try to figure out if something changed (sold to a careless investor?). That's when I saw other very recent disappointing reviews. I also noticed a large discrepancy in price -- the stay I booked two months ago was almost twice as much as the exact same stay if I booked it that day. I expressed my severe disappointment to Maria and showed her the price difference, she said that she would talk with her superior (who was never present) to see if any adjustments could be made. Maria was very kind and understanding, but ultimately we were told that prices could not be adjusted -- but she could give us a tour/history of the property and we could have a free hour in the Spa to try to appease our dissatisfaction.
In the end, on our anniversary day, we hiked the on-site trail. It was actually a nice hike, but VERY POORLY MAINTAINED and MARKED. Afterward, we came back to our room for showers, had lunch (staff surprised us with a bottle of cava) and then ended up hanging out, catching up on work, email, etc in a nice common room. My husband asked Maria how he could order a boulevardier from the hotel bar and Maria ended up making him a great one. Eduardo (the chef) made us a special anniversary menu and it was also really delicious. Again, this is why it is so difficult to rate our stay -- the people we encountered were fantastic, kind, hospitable but the overall experience was VERY DISAPPOINTING and OVERPRICED.
There is more I could write about our very strange experience (recall this whole time it is just us and a couple other guests), but if you have read this far you probably get the point: Torre Del Marques is NOT a "5-star" establishment. The grounds are under construction and activities and experiences advertised are not available. The place is not really managed by anyone and is severely understaffed with individual employees carrying a lot of weight to keep everything afloat.
