Overview

Nungwi sits at the northernmost point of Zanzibar, where the Indian Ocean meets a pale sand shoreline and the tide holds close rather than pulling far out, so the water stays swimmable through the day. Sandies Nungwi Beach is an all-inclusive resort here, part of the Planhotel Hospitality Group, with 125 rooms and suites and a character that suits couples after quiet beachside dinners as readily as families filling their…

    Dream trip!

We stayed as a couple at this fabulous resort at the end of September 2026, I am leaving a review by thematic areas. Entertainment The guys are all exceptional and despite being few in number, they are very good at entertainment and never intrusive. The evening shows are unique and truly original. Well done to everyone and thanks to Matteo the head entertainer, Sofia, Elisa, Aurora, Giovanni, Alberto, Sara, the DJ, Martina, and all the excursion and logistics staff. Structure and cleanliness The village is truly charming, with little houses characteristic of the area and everything is very compact and immersed in palm trees and baobabs - no shuttle is needed to reach the pool and beach. The rooms are very clean and the staff is truly very kind - there are no televisions in the rooms, which for us was refreshing. There is a lot of security in the resort since, in case of high tide, you can circulate between the villages so as not to go through the water, which makes everything safer. Restaurant Everything was excellent, both for the variety and for the high quality of the food. The menu always features something Italian as well as local or international options. We personally preferred to try the local delicacies: the coconut peas were divine!!!! The fruit is always very abundant and we stocked up on passion fruit, pineapple, and small bananas, as well as papaya and watermelon. I have read very negative comments about the food; personally, I wonder what these people eat at home… among other things, I have a very sensitive stomach, but this week, even though I didn't hold back from eating, I felt great!! Sea It is undoubtedly the most beautiful coast on the entire island and it is also the least affected by the tide phenomenon, which means that you can always swim, although at certain times you have to walk with water shoes because the water is very shallow - and full of starfish! - while at other times the water comes right up to the steps. Useful tips The beach is full of Maasai and beach boys who sell their excursions without tricks or deception. The Maasai are a bit persistent but they are fundamentally good people and have little markets near the beach where you can buy nice souvenirs. There is no ATM in the resort, but you can pay almost everywhere in Euros or, at most, with a POS terminal in dollars. I recommend bringing a supply of cash to avoid withdrawing with a card with high fees. Super personal tip: I got braids on the beach but, due to a series of factors and unfortunate coincidences, I developed a not-so-pleasant allergic reaction… if you want to get them, maybe it's better to do it on the last day of your vacation! Excursions Nakupenda and Prison Island - wonderful! Stone Town and spice forest - not to be missed! Mnemba + dolphins + starfish - it thrilled us a little less due to the large influx of tourists… Sunset aperitif - the one organized by the beach down on the right is beautiful; we ended up celebrating a Zanzibari wedding, it was a unique experience! Children's village and monkey forest - we didn't go, but everyone in the village told us it is very, very touching. If you have a way to bring notebooks and pencils, the children will appreciate it very much. What can I say… a dream trip!

    An experience to try

First time for us in Zanzibar. Reading some reviews, we left a bit worried. Instead, fortunately, we had a good time. Small village, well-maintained, beautiful gardens. Alpitour staff welcomed us with care and professionalism right from the start. The local staff made us feel at home, very friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious, always well-cleaned and maintained. Restaurant by the sea with a good selection of Italian and local dishes including first courses, main courses, salads, desserts, and fruit. The only observations I must highlight: the cook uses a single pan to "toss the pasta" regardless of the sauce, and more importantly, while guaranteeing dishes for those with gluten intolerance, there was no separate kitchen to avoid cross-contamination. Luckily, by avoiding pasta and bread, I didn't have any problems. My husband, who has no intolerances, gorged himself on fish, pizza, and even local dishes. The dining room waiters were always attentive and smiling. Small but very pretty beach. Postcard-perfect sea, with a slight low and high tide phenomenon. While walking, you meet the beach boys (who offer you excursions at lower prices than those of Alpitour) and the Masai who try to sell you some souvenirs. A special note goes to all the entertainment staff. All young and well-trained, never intrusive. As for the excursions, we did them with Alpitour; we felt more at ease compared to going with the beach boys, even if they cost a bit more. The sea ones for snorkeling are beautiful, especially Safari Blue. The only negative note is that to reach the port to board the dhow (typical boat), you had to take a 90/120-minute minibus ride on rough roads. On the other hand, the excursion to the capital, Stone Town (declared a World Heritage site), was a disappointment, but we only saw an Anglican church (why????), the cellars where slaves were packed before being sold, and a smelly fish and meat market that we crossed quickly to go smell the spices on the other side of the market. We passed in front of Freddy Mercury's birthplace; we wanted to go inside, but the guide had us take 2 quick photos inside and then told us he would leave us 45 minutes of free time so we could visit it. It's a shame that he then took us through a tangle of narrow alleys full of shops/bazaars and we weren't able to go back. We also used the SPA service, trained staff, super massages. Our opinion of the vacation is still more than positive even if, compared to other Bravo villages, in our opinion this one was of a lower level.

    Welcome to Zanzibar

Second time for us in Zanzibar. The first with our 10-year-old daughter. The first at the Bravo Sandies Baobab. Honestly, reading the various reviews, I started off with a \"stomachache,\" wondering what kind of dump we had booked. And then we finally arrived... Small, well-kept village. Alpitour staff welcomed us with care and professionalism right from the start. Local staff made us feel at home. Yes, at home, because that is how we felt. Spacious room, always well-cleaned and well-kept. Restaurant by the sea with an excellent selection of Italian and local dishes. I am a vegetarian and I always had a variety of options to choose from. My daughter, who is a picky eater, always ate with gusto. My husband gorged himself on fish. If you are looking for stratospheric buffets, this is not the place. Here you will find an excellent selection and truly delicious dishes. Italian chef who manages and teaches the local staff. Dining room waiters always attentive and smiling. A special thought to Julie who pampered us. Small but wonderful beach. Postcard-perfect sea, with a slight low and high tide phenomenon. There are the beach boys and the Masai... But you just need to respect them and chat calmly, and everything becomes easy. We thank Sebo the carpenter, a special guy. Marco 2 and Mario 18, the Masai guys we bonded with the most, Pacioccone and his team. A special note goes to all the entertainment staff. All young and well-trained. Cheerful, empathetic, smiling. Always available to make the stay special for the guests. ( We have been to quite a few resorts.. But this team filled our hearts). Beautiful, carefree, and well-organized days and evenings. Matteo, Sara, Aurora, Sofia, Elisa, Alberto, Mamo, and "our" Giovanni, keep it up. We already miss all of this.
